Bouverie Wildflower Hike  

The Bouverie Wildflower Hike  is scheduled for Friday, April 23rd from 10:30  until ? Last year we stayed until 3 with some members leaving early. We have many trails to choose from and we will plan the “hike” according to the energy of the hikers (as we do with the kids!) We will walk and talk and identify and then choose an area to sketch in. We eat lunch out on the trail. Please let me know if you are interested. I can take about eight artists but if we have more interested I will try and round up another docent. 2nd Annual Membership show at the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens in January of 2011. Entries will be due in December or late fall. Start working on something new and wonderful!

You are all encouraged to attend our third annual meeting of the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists. It will be held on Saturday, February 6th from 1-3pm in room C-210 of Fort Mason. There should be adequate parking inside the gate. 

 Highlights of the meeting will include: 

1.     Elections of officers so that we may proceed with the formation of our chapter under the auspices of the ASBA. You are encouraged to think about participation on the executive board or a committee. Please feel free to nominate yourself for any position. 

2.     Review of events that are planned for the year. Please come with ideas for future events.

3.     Membership forms and fees to join NCalSBA for the year 2010 will be due at this time. A form has been included here for you. ncalsba-membership-form

4.     Portfolio sharing is encouraged this year. If you would rather share some recent work that is also welcome.

5.     Pot luck again - Plan to bring food to share. We will have beverages on hand. 

Botanical Prints by Kristin JakobOctober 1, 2009 – January 4, 2010San Francisco Botanical Garden Society presents Plant Portraits, an exhibition of botanical prints by Kristin Jakob. A Bay Area artist, Kristin Jakob takes inspiration from simple weeds to elaborate horticultural creations, with many subjects from the native plants of California. Working almost exclusively from live specimens, her collection expresses both horticultural precision and artistic ease. “Accuracy and beauty are equally important goals. I intend my art to serve as a medium through which my chosen subjects can speak, as it were, for themselves, and reveal their exquisite characters to the viewer.”

Great news! Wendy Hollender has agreed to do a Colored Pencil Workshop for us on her way to Hawaii. Learn new colored pencil techniques surrounded by the beauty of the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. If the weather permits we will do some sketching outside. This is a great opportunity to have an East Coast artist here and for our group to get together and draw.

Wendy is the coordinator of the Botanical Illustration Program at the New York Botanical Gardens where she also teaches. She is a prize winning artist and designer. Her work has been exhibited at the New York Horticultural Society and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Royal Horticultural Society. Her colored pencil work is rich, intense, colorful and botanically accurate. She is the author of Botanical Drawing: A Beginner’s Guide. You can view her work at http://www.whartdesign.com .

Come visit beautiful Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen and hike and sketch the wildflowers in season. I can take six to eight hikers out so sign up now- no cost (although Bouverie always appreciates any donations). Bouverie is just down the road from Sonoma and next door to Quarry Hill. Unlike Quarry Hill, Bouverie is preserved Sonoma County land with four plant communities, a wonderful creek and a waterfall.  This is an amazing place to visit anytime of year but wildflower season is truly beautiful. We do school hikes for third and fourth gradersbut Monday is a free day so it will be quiet and peaceful at the Preserve.
