The entrance is prominently marked, flanked by planters, and directly in front of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. The Valley Life Sciences Building is a large building easily identified by its “neo-Babylonian” bas relief, located east of the prominent eucalyptus grove that is near the West Gate entry kiosk at the east end of University Avenue.

Note: We will try to limit this tour to 15 people. If there is substantial interest, a second tour will be scheduled with Andrew Doran and Dr. John Taylor, curator of fungi and Herbaria trustee, at a later date.

The University and Jepson Herbaria of the University of California at Berkeley are two collections of pressed plants housed together along with research labs, libraries, and archives. Together the Herbaria hold about 2,200,000 specimens, one of the largest collections in North America.

Linda Ann Vorobik, botanist, editor, and illustrator of numerous botanical publications, cherishes all three west coast states as home. She holds a PhD from the University of Oregon, Eugene, and conducts field research and teaches in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon. She currently lives on Lopez Island, Washington, and visits Berkeley on a regular basis, where she is a Research Associate at the University Herbarium, UC.

Linda has over 25 years of illustration and college level teaching experience, and is principal illustrator of, for example, The Flora of Santa Cruz Island, The Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California, and has contributed many illustrations to the Morphology and Evolution of Vascular Plants. 14th Annual ASBA Meeting and Conference in Southern California

American Society of Botanical Artists Presents:
14th ANNUAL MEETING AND CONFERENCE

Pasadena and San Marino, CA
October 30 – Nov 1, 2008

For registration, detailed info, etc. please visit www.asba-conf.org

Registration deadline: October 3, 2008

Below are some excerpts from the conference website:

“Activities will be based at the Hilton Pasadena, in Pasadena and The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, in San Marino. The members of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California (BAGSC), one of the ASBA’s largest chapters, look forward to welcoming you!

Wonderful workshop instructors, fascinating lectures and forums, and trips to fabulous museums and botanical gardens! But the best part is meeting so many other people who share your love of botanical art. There are some new aspects to this year’s Annual Meeting:

1. This year, the Annual Meeting is a full three days, allowing some workshops to be repeated so more people can take advantage of them, and there are some two-day workshops to allow in-depth study.

2. As always, a mix of international, national and local artists are involved, and a blend of free and fee-based workshops will accommodate many budgets.

3. For the first time, there is a ‘closed’ date for the registration, making it even more important for you to register in a timely fashion.”

The ‘Exhibitors’ Hall’, instructors’ bios and images, and posting of class materials lists on the conference site will be continually updated until the time of the Annual Meeting, so bookmark the conference site and check back often to keep up with what’s new!

“Back to Basics” Botanical Watercolor Workshop with Louise Smith in San Francisco

NCALSBA’s San Francisco Region presents:
“Back to Basics” Botanical Watercolor Workshop with Louise Smith

Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 9:00 – 4:00
Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, 10:00 – 4:00
Garden Club Room
S.F. County Fair Building at Strybing Botanical Garden
Golden Gate Park
9th Avenue at Lincoln Way, S.F. 94122

***THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL; REGISTRATION IS CLOSED***

On the first day of the workshop we will meet at the Strybing Arboretum Library at 9:00 a.m. for an hour to study rare botanical art books that they have archived. Louise will briefly describe her approach to composition and we will analyze works for use of color and composition.

The workshop will reintroduce basic botanical watercolor techniques such as washes, graded washes, and drybrush. This will be done through a format of predetermined exercises which will begin to introduce color theory and watercolor mixing, both in the palate and through color glazing. Students will have time to work in class as well as at home to complete a series of exercises designed to tighten control of the watercolor medium and develop a library of mixed watercolor chips.

The second day will be dedicated to more color mixing and color theory. We will begin by clarifying problems that have cropped up in the home work then start on the task of mixing colors to match flower petals and leaves. Time will be alloted at the end of class for critique.

Materials list will be provided. This workshop is limited to 15.

Visit the SFBG Strybing Arboretum website for directions at http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/visiting/page2.html.
